- Or the engineer (or whoever) layed out ther PCB wasn't carefull with
- the track layout, coupling exessive noise (there's plenty inside the
- PC) into the audio channel...

- Depends also on country.

- Yup. And it's done that way VIA FAST INTERNAL SERIAL PORT.

- Aren't you exagerating?...:-) (eight hundred thousand?).

-
- Nope. It really is a FAST UART implementation. NO DMA to the best of
- our knowledge (NATSEMI state this clearly). Using a DMA would render
- it incompatible with serial port drivers in Windows and DOS (and these
- modems ARE COMPATIBLE with DATACOMM programs such as PROCOMM PLUS for
- WINDOWS, Windows Terminal, etc.
- I think that is enough to assume it does so via a serial port.
-
- >2) they do in fact use some sort of compression.
-
- Sure they do. but it's LOSSLESS for the outgoing message. Incoming
- messages are indeed compressed a bit (although not much quality is
- sacrificed). Anyway, the OUTGOING message is the one that represents
- you and should be of the highest quality. Incoming messages are for
- listening and deleting usually (for archiving, they sound O.K).
-
- How about this idea: Anybody who think's he's got a GOOD SOUNDING
- voicemail system (modem based, not one of those big-shot systems)
- would provide a demo mailbox (with some voice and MUSIC, which is more
- sensitive to distortions) where callers can call and listen to the
- quality of the announcement, and maybe leave a message stating their
- impression. As our tribute to this discussion, we are willing to setup
- such a demo mailbox on our FAX/VOICE system for the benefit of
- interested net'ers. Interested parties should email us for details.

-
- On the contrary: If it's a good program, we all would like to hear
- about it. Anybody using VG with a TYIN modem? Anyway, here is our
- wishlist for such VOICE S/W:
-
- - More than 100 Voice/FAX mailboxes.
- - CID display on-screen
- - FAX/DATA/VOICE CID logging to file
- - Customizable voice menus and paths
- - FAX receive per mailbox
- - Voice message forwarding to Cellular phone
- - Remote FAX/VOICE message retreival
- - Message move/copy to other mailbox
- - Voice messages broadcasting
- - Pager notification
- - Voice synthesis for mailbox # announcements (if no OGM recorded)
- - OGM WAV import / export
- - support for caller scanning all mailbox's, and leaving messages only
- to those he decides (i.e reaching a mailbox and leaving a message
- doesn't require calling again to leave a message to another mailbox).
-
- One last wish: Let it support the TYIN... :-)
- (Since the TYIN bundled S/W is rock solid but pretty basic and does
- not support ALL above features)
